Why Baby Teeth Matter
Through eating, speaking, and early chewing, children can either get off to a great start or show early signs of dental problems. The first teeth that develop in a child’s mouth help provide the framework for jaw bones and muscles, and eventually determine the placement of adult teeth and a comfortable oral structure. Teeth need to be lost at certain times to ensure proper oral health. If they last too long, they can decay and cause pain, abscesses, and infections which can spread to permanent teeth. Because some teeth don’t fully emerge until 14, it is very important to closely monitor your child’s progress, as well as bring them in for regular dental cleanings and checkups.
Oral hygiene and practices you teach your kids will last a lifetime in terms of oral health and structural strength. Early introduction to the importance of brushing and flossing makes the habit much more solidified as they enter their teens.
Should Baby Teeth Be Treated the Same as Adult Teeth?
There are some variations in how children should practice oral care, and it varies based on their age and oral progress. For one, dental care begins before teeth even emerge. Wiping the baby’s gums is crucial to avoiding future decay, then transitioning to brushing visible, emerging teeth with a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste.
When children reach the ages of 2,3, and 4, the amount of toothpaste used should increase to around 1/8th of an inch in diameter. It is crucial at this point to also encourage your child to brush their own teeth, to slowly start creating a habitual routine.
What Dental Problems Can Occur in Children?
Even with brand new teeth, problems can emerge for a variety of reasons. Because of this, regular trips to the dentist as soon as teeth start emerging are crucial to ensuring healthy mouths for little ones. Healthy teeth aid in eating, speaking, and overall health, so be sure to look for signs of the following in your children:
- Tooth Decay -This can occur at an early age by a child sucking on a bottle or other objects too often. Be sure to monitor this, and ensure the action is not overdone
- Gum Disease -Inflammation of the gums can occur as soon as a child enters their first year of life. Make sure to consistently wipe the gums to keep them clean from the get go.
- Oral Habits -If a child starts grinding their teeth or clenching their jaw at a young age, this can become a habit which they may struggle to break as they age.
