What is a denture?
A denture mimics real teeth through synthetic materials that sit in a base that is fit to your mouth. This improves the physical look of your mouth, as well as your body’s natural feeling for having a full set of teeth in place for the jaw.
What are some of the different types of dentures?
There are numerous options for dentures that our dentists can help provide to you given your situation and a detailed consultation in our office. Your options vary, and each choice is going to be explained to you, so you with our professionals can make the best decision possible.
Conventional Complete Dentures
Conventional complete dentures include fixtures for the top and bottom rows of teeth.
The upper denture replaces top teeth and keeps the upper jaw in place. It covers all natural teeth you’d have on the top row.
The lower denture covers the lower part of your mouth, assisting in the makeup of your teeth and tongue.
This option requires the removal or absence of all natural teeth. If needed, we can remove teeth if conventional complete dentures are the best option for you.
Implant-Supported Complete Dentures
This option also replaces all natural teeth and keeps the structure of your mouth intact when the damage to your natural teeth has affected the makeup of your gums, jaw, and tongue. Implant-supported complete dentures are possible if the gums can support dentures and need a little extra help in structuring the entirety of the mouth.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are installed into your mouth without any healing time for your gums. This helps get a solution into your mouth immediately, with minimal changes completed by your dentist as needed once they are in place.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures sit in a base like veneers, but mimic the look, structure, and color of natural teeth entirely. This option helps provide a stronger base for one section of teeth needed, instead of full rows on the top or bottom.
How do I take care of my dentures?
Dentures need special care. We are here to make sure you know everything you need to keep them healthy and secure:
● Dentures require careful handling. If dropped, they can break. Be sure to keep them in a safe place when not in-mouth, and always handle with cold water.
● Dentures must be stored in cool water to keep their shape. Hot water can alter their form and function for your mouth, so never use anything hotter than room temperature water.
● Dentures should be cared for with the focus and habitual cleaning as you would for normal teeth, but in a different way. Upon removal, wash dentures with cool water. Remove all food particles and other debris. Be sure to use an extra soft brush and care when cleaning with a chemical cleanser meant for dentures. Once finished, be sure to rinse with cool water to ensure every chemical is removed.
● Dentures cannot take the harshness of toothbrushes or toothpaste. This leads to marks, scrapes, and less effective dentures overall. Plus, it can ruin their appearance. Denture cleansers have ADA seals on the box for official support of professionals.
● Dentures don’t mean you are off the hook for mouth cleaning. Be sure to brush the gums, surrounding mouth area, and tongue regularly as you would with a full mouth of teeth.
● To keep your dentures structurally sound, you will be educated on what foods you will need to avoid.
● Speaking of dentists, be sure to visit often. This might mean more than the ADA’s recommended two annual visits. Your dentures will be checked for any irregularities, on top of checks and cleanings just like you expect from a visit.
