What is a veneer?
A veneer is a thin cover that improves the appearance of the front sides of teeth that might be:
- Chipped or cracked
- Feature large gaps
- Stained or discolored
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are made specially in a lab, leading to a longer wait time, but also a stronger and more durable cover
To get started with your porcelain veneer, the dentist often removes some tooth enamel to make room for a perfect fitting veneer. After more adjustments, the veneer is fitted to your mouth, ensuring a great feeling and great looking alternative to chipped and discolored teeth.
Composite Resin Veneers
Like porcelain veneers, composite resin veneers are thin and fit to your mouth, but use a different material. This does make them a little less durable, but they are also very easy to fix should any problems arise.
A dentist can fit you for composite resin veneers in-office, and you can usually leave that day with your veneers ready to go! Less enamel needs to be removed than when placing a porcelain veneer, but some is still taken to ensure the resin can form and bond with your teeth in a natural way.
What Can I do to Protect My Veneers?
Veneers can last quite a long time without repair or replacement. To ensure a healthy veneer, be sure to follow these tips:
- Avoid foods that could cause staining, as well as damage to the veneers and their structure. Even chewing ice can damage a veneer, so be aware of what may hurt or damage yours. At your visit, we will explain what should be off limits, so you don’t spoil or discolor your veneers.
- To protect your teeth and veneers, keep up with regular brushing twice a day for two minutes. On top of that, flossing should be done daily to remove bacteria and plaque that might lead to further oral damage. Any plaque that develops on the teeth can show through veneers, so it is important to properly clean them to keep the look of the mold pristine.
- Twice a year, schedule a dental appointment at Lifetime Dental Excellence to get a check-up, cleaning, and make sure your veneers are still in good shape.
How do I know if I need veneers?
If you hesitate to smile for visual reasons, veneers could be right for you. They are not for everyone, however, so be sure to make an appointment with a dentist to review your oral health and dental options.
